PENNDULUM WRITING

FEATURE ON ANIMAL SHELTER

Albert Einstein once said, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” All around the world, not enough animals are taken care well enough. Much of the animals suffer the abuse, neglection, and other worse things that we humans can not even imagine what they have faced. Luckily, this world isn’t 100% filled with abrogating, gloomy, evil people. Animal rescue shelters are a safe environment to revive and restore the faith in these animals. With the help of angelic volunteers at animal rescue shelters, they are the crucial cause to help this work. The most commonly abused animals are dogs, cats, and some livestock animals. Once someone owns a pet, they think they can do whatever they want to do with them. As we all know, owning pets means we must take in a huge part of responsibility, and we must treat our pets like our own child with infinite love and care. Worldwide, over 115-million animals face domestic violence annually. It’s either by the abusive owners, lab testing animals for cosmetology, and other harmful experiments done on animals. We humans must try to adopt these animals and welcome them to our homes, they deserve love.

Animals are important to our lives because some of them such as service dogs are trained to have the ability to help the physically or mentally disabled people in many ways. Animals can provide us happiness when we are alone, they can help us chase down burglary and protect our families in the middle of the night. In some countries, animals such as ox, help farmers graze rice farms for industries. We humans use sheep wool to be made into clothes to keep warmth for the freezing winters. We must not look at animals as something on the bottom of our lists because without them, it will be much more difficult to survive. We depend on them and some of them depend on us. “Greatness of the nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated,” quoted Gandhi. That is a perfect quote and it also represents how each person in that nation treats each other as well, if humans are not treated well in a nation then imagine how the animals are treated.

Organizations such as the Animal Aid Unlimited, Sochi Dogs, Humane Societal International, Best Friends Save Them All, Pet Haven of Minnesota, BARC Shelter, and over 5,000 more shelters around the world are created to rescue these animals. Annually, around 3.2 million animals are adopted from the shelters every year. Many people agree on adopting animals from shelters are better than buying them since the animals from the shelters have faced abuse by harsh people or environments, the shelters work diligently to nurture them. Those who will adopt them would learn about what these animals have faced and learn about their different and harsh background types. When people adopt these animals, that means they are saving lives and reducing overpopulation of these pets, plus it’s relatively cheaper than buying them.

Over 500,000 animals get rescued every year by rescuers who are professionally trained and went under four years of education for their specific job. These compassionate workers would travel miles to save hundreds to thousands of animals in various kinds of countries, depending on their type of organization. We people can also cooperate and help adopt these animals. If we do not adopt these animals, these shelters would be overpopulated and there will be a decrease in space to provide for extra devastating animals’ souls out there too. While the kind rescuers help to catch and investigate on these animals to bring them back to the shelters, we too should also help adopt and help spread the awareness to every family or person you know who loves animals.

To the people who loves animals from the top of their hearts, it is a spectacular idea to adopt an animal from these shelters. For those who love animals but cannot afford to adopt them, it is okay, you can still donate in a buck or two, into animal charity organizations, it is what your kindness that counts.  And to the people who hates animals for a reason or no reason at all, you need to rethink everything about how animals affect us in millions of positive ways. Who knows, they may protect you from a disaster or thief attack, so please treat all animals with respect because they are living organisms, they deserve the same respect as well.

Climate change is wrecking our Earth

Planet Earth is coming to a wreck as climate change is negatively affecting our oxygen, food, water, and environments.

The main components that we are focusing on are the factors that cause climate change, the life-long effects, the recent issues such as tree or plant loss, and thawing ice glaciers. Not only does this affect us humans, but it also affects millions of other animals and plants. This would result in the major loss of biodiversity, leading to the extinction of millions of species. Beginning with the 20th century, scientists have been keeping records of temperatures over the years. It is shown that the current Earth temperature has increased by 0.85 degrees celsius. An AP environmental science teacher from Pennridge High School, Sabrina Bates, informs that the “Arctic is most affected, the warmer temperatures increase the spread of invasive animals, plants, and diseases.”

As we take a look into Australia’s recent bushfires, up to 11 million hectares have been incinerated. Statistics show that approximately one billion animals have been wiped out, following along with the destruction of over 2,500 homes. When wildfires occur, it emits twice the greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This will worsen the air quality, and make it difficult for humans and animals to breathe. Bates warns us about the crucial effects and says, “Animals will face mass extinction, coastal cities will face frequent flooding, intense storms, and potential for a lot to go wrong.” Despite the fact of the disastrous crisis going on, Bates believes in “human ingenuity.”

As you may know, Earth’s temperature is increasing and heating. As a result of that, the Geophysical Journal International claims that “the melting of the ice adds 2.6 percent into our ocean waters.” Currently, the coasts of Georgia are facing a rising sea level crisis. Each year, the waters rise at least two inches more while their land is eroding and sinking based on the Sea Level Rise studies. The Arctic’s increasing temperatures and melting ice glaciers would abnormally change the currents and the temperatures circulating globally. Ice and glaciers have melted in the Arctic’s ice cap, leaving only 1.32 million square feet left. This effect will bring in many disadvantages to the species that live in the Arctic, such as songbirds. Songbirds play an important role in insect control and pollination.

In order to diminish the long-lasting effects of climate change on our environments, Zoë Swartley, a student of Pennridge High School, says, “I’ve cut many single use items from my life including straws, paper plates, plastic ziploc bags, etc. I also shop less and don’t buy things I don’t need.” By doing that, Swartley says she saves, “hundreds of products from being tossed into landfills.” Anyone can help to weaken the climate change effects, Bates says, “alleviate burning of fossil fuels by using LED lights and investing in renewable energy.” Eating vegan or vegetarian every once in a while, growing your own food, buying organics, turning off water when not in use, and unplugging unused electronics can progressively lead to a positive change if we can contribute one by one together.
